A recent Newsweek poll show Kerry gaining some ground on the President after last week’s debate, with 47% of those polled saying they will vote Kerry, and 45% saying they will vote for Bush. One would think that this little boost would be enough to keep Kerry and his staff from making even more false promises. But obviously it’s not. This morning I was watching Fox & Friends on the Fox News Channel, who interviewed Chris Cox, an NRA Executive Director and spokesperson who discussed their recent ad, which implied that Kerry uses a little poodle with pink ribbons as his hunting dog. Clearly a satirical approach to discredit Kerry’s record among hunters and gun owners. To be “Fair and Balanced” the show brought on a Kerry Campaign representative to discuss, among other things Kerry’s credibility with hunters and gun owners. He said the following, with respect to gun owners and Kerry:
“If you’re a hunter, you’ll love John Kerry…He’s never going to do a thing to infringe on hunter’s rights.”
Hasn’t the Kerry Campaign figured out that we’re not idiots? We know the truth about this guy’s voting record, and it does not support the interests of gun owners or hunters. Here are some facts:
• Kerry co-sponsored S. 1431, a bill that would reauthorize the assault weapons ban. It effectively would bring the US into an era of Australian-like gun control. (November 21, 2003)
• Kerry voted for the “Kennedy Amendment”, S.Amdt. 2619 to S. 1805 (Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act), just one of the nine times he voted in favor of banning semi-automatic firearms. (March 2, 2004)
• Kerry voted for S.Amdt. 2637 to S. 1805 (Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act), which provides for a 10-year extension of the assault weapons ban. (March 2, 2004)
• Kerry voted for S.Amdt. 362 to S. 254 to regulate the sale of firearms at gun shows. (May 20, 1999)
• Kerry co-sponsored S.21 (California Desert Protection Act of 1994), which would close off California’s Mojave Desert to hunting. (April 12, 1994)
Words, during an election year usually don’t mean much. Prior actions are what we need to be looking at to decide which side of an issue a particular candidate is on. Kerry may say he is a hunter, and that he will protect hunter’s rights, but so far we haven’t seen any proof to back this up.
