Cash For Clunkers Thank You For Proving Our Point
Posted by Scott in Entitlements, Gov't Spending, Healthcare, Taxes on August 21st, 2009
For years, conservatives and liberals have clashed over taxes. Do we tax less, and allow the free market to thrive with the increased spending, or do we tax more to allow for an increase in government spending.
Cash For Clunkers has proven the conservative point of taxing less to benefit the economy, and here’s how.
Everyone, especially liberals are pointing out that one of the successes of Cash For Clunkers is that if you give people money, they will spend it. But why did the government have to place restrictions on how it could be spent? Had they simply not collected that $3 billion from the American taxpayer, we would have spent it as we saw fit to begin with.
Not only would people inevitably have purchased new (or even used cars), they also would have had additional money to pay for things like, gee I don’t know, maybe health care?
This leads me to another point. Cash For Clunkers was supposed to last until November. Whether it was the apparent “success” of the program, or the flaws in the paperwork processing that caused the program’s early departure, it was still cut short. What happens when the proposed universal health care ends up becoming too “successful” for its own good, or the inevitable mountains of paperwork become too much to handle? Are people going to be left waiting weeks or months for the treatment they desperately need (similar to the auto dealers waiting on payments they also desperately need)?
It’s time to see the light at the end of the government sponsored tunnel. More government involvement than is absolutely necessary in anything is never a good thing. And right now there is definitely far more than is necessary.

What’s Coming From Dr. Obama MD
Posted by Scott in Entitlements, Healthcare on July 27th, 2009
The President, and democrats in Congress have been pushing hard lately for a health care bill to be passed. The proposed bill will place tough restrictions on current health insurers, as well as set up a government run insurance for any uninsured American.
So what do Americans have to look forward to? Based on other government programs and trends from other countries with socialized health care, here are a few of the things Americans will likely see in the future:
Quotas:Like any other government operation, there will be a budget in place. That essentially means that the government will place limits on itself as far as how much they will be able to spend each year. The President mentioned in his public address last week that doctors often times will choose the more expensive treatment, when a less expensive one will suffice. In this situation, a less expensive treatment might be mandated when a more expensive one is necessary. Additionally, the socialized programs in the UK and other countries are plagued with other similar annual quotas.
Longer Waits: The US Government recently launched the “Cash for Clunkers” program where it will pay $4,500 for your used car if you purchase a new, more fuel efficient car in return. The program was scheduled to start last Friday, but was delayed until today due to a problem with the website used by dealerships to report the transactions. While this doesn’t seem like a major catastrophe, the slightest wait for someone who is having a heart attack would be a disastrous catastrophe.
Poor Coverage: Medicare, Medicaid and veterans’ hospitals are all shining examples of poorly run health care in the US. The US government already has a proven track record of poor coverage through these programs, so why does anyone think that the new system will be any different?
Redundancy: The President said that there are millions of uninsured Americans who will benefit from government run health care. He implied that these millions of Americans are unable to get access to insurance because they simply can’t afford it. If this was true, they would automatically be covered under Medicaid. He failed to mention that there also happen to be millions of young, healthy Americans, who choose to spend their money on other things than health insurance.
The list could continue, but I think I’ve made my point. The government has yet to prove that it is capable of running anything without having bureaucrats putting their two cents in where it isn’t wanted (or needed). Health care is something that should be left to the public to handle, not bureaucrats.

Universal Insurance
Posted by Scott in Healthcare, Legislation on April 26th, 2009
Let’s get one thing straight here. When people start talking about “universal health care” they’re really talking about how one goes about paying for health care. The reality is that they’re not talking about health care at all. They’re talking about insurance versus out of pocket expenses.
I was on my honeymoon last year in Europe and was talking to some nice people from England. The discussion about the differences in our two countries health care came up when talking about the upcoming Presidential election. The man I was talking to was defending the universal system in England by saying that if you don’t have insurance in the US, an ambulance won’t even take you to the hospital, and if you do manage to get to the hospital they won’t even look at you until you prove you can pay for the medical care.
He couldn’t be further from the truth. In the US, as in England, no one is denied medical care in an emergency. The only difference is who foots the bill. In the US, if you have insurance, your insurance company pays, if not, you do. In England, the tax payers fund all the health care.
Oh yea, one other major difference is the bureaucrats that the British have to deal with in order to get medical care. We’re used to bureaucratic nonsense in the US when dealing with the government (long lines at the DMV, waiting periods for licenses and permits, etc.), but we don’t have life threatening injuries when dealing with the bureaucracy.
I never realized it until I spoke with this guy, but it seems like the British are fearful that without a universal health care system, they might not be able to get health care at all. The thought that individuals can pay for their own health care doesn’t seem to cross their mind. As a matter of fact, when I explained the insurance process in the US to this guy, he sort of had an “ah-ha” moment, almost like he never considered how easy it could be to simply pay for it yourself.
So what’s the point here? The liberals keep touting universal health care as the way to go in the US. No one stops to think that we already have universal health care. Anyone and everyone can walk into an emergency room and get treatment for their medical problems. It seems like liberals in the US are learning from the lessons learned from other countries like England. They are instilling a sense of fear into Americans that don’t have insurance, making them think that it will be impossible to gain access to health care without universal coverage.
For whatever reason these people don’t have health insurance, either if they can’t afford it or don’t want to pay for it, they still have access to health care if they need it.

He Only has to Wait a Week?
Posted by Scott in Healthcare on September 5th, 2004
Earlier this week, Bill Clinton announced that he was going to have to have quadruple bypass surgery after doctors found that his heart was in poor condition. His wife, Hillary Clinton made an announcement shortly after, saying that the former President was lucky that he has access to such good healthcare, and that it’s unfortunate that all Americans don’t have access to this same level of medical care. This clearly was a political plug for universal, socialized healthcare in America.I think, an even better plug would be to have the former President go up to Canada to have his heart surgery, where they have universal healthcare. After all, if universal healthcare is so great, then why shouldn’t he race up there to use it? I’ll tell you why. It’s because the Clintons know that universal healthcare doesn’t work. Hillary just promotes it as such a great policy to win votes. Unfortunately, it will win her some votes, because there are many people out there without adequate healthcare, who would love for the government to pay for it. But Hillary knows, and anyone with any sense could tell you that universal healthcare will not succeed.
To prove my point, consider the fact that since Canada adopted the universal healthcare system, the number of doctors dropped drastically. The reason – young students don’t want to spend 7-8 years going to college to become a doctor when they won’t be able to earn the money that their labor is worth. As a result, Canada is suffering from a lack of quality doctors. The problem is actually so bad, that Canadian hospitals are adding nurses to the staff, to take the place of doctors.
Another result since Canada’s adoption of the socialized healthcare system, is that people are forced to wait weeks, months and even years before getting treated. Why is this? It’s because people are all of a sudden given the right to receive free healthcare, so they end up going to the doctor every time they get a tummy ache. That, on top of the fact that there are so few doctors available, makes the waiting time so much longer. As a matter of fact, there are some provinces in Canada, which made it illegal for doctors to accept payment from patients for services. This means that even if Clinton went up to Canada for his surgery, he wouldn’t even be able to buy his way to the front of the waiting line. Capitalism is a lost concept up there, it seems.
I didn’t want to get into the politics behind Clinton’s surgery, because it really shouldn’t be a political matter, but Hillary had to go and open her mouth. The bottom line is that universal healthcare is a fundamentally flawed system, and when it comes time for you to make your decision as to whether or not you support it, just remember that the people endorsing it aren’t willing to risk their lives by volunteering to use it, so why should you?
All politics aside though, I wish President Clinton the best of luck, and a speedy recovery.

Universal Healthcare – Who Does it Help?
Posted by Scott in Healthcare on June 10th, 2004
Ever since Canada and many European nations began universal healthcare programs, liberals in the U.S. have been trying to get a similar nationwide healthcare plan going. To most casual observers of this plan, it may even sound like a good idea, where everyone – no matter of how rich or poor you are – gets the same healthcare coverage. But that’s what the liberals want you to think. They want the American, who knows nothing more about politics in America than what Dan Rather tells him on the news, to think that this plan is going to cure all healthcare problems this country has ever had. Well they’re wrong, and if you’re one of those people, then read on. This article could change your vote in November, and if we’re lucky, it could change your whole perspective on politics in America. What the liberals want you to think is that by nationalizing healthcare, you will a) not have to pay for any health services you may need, b) you will be receiving the same quality healthcare that you receive today and c) you will receive healthcare as quickly as you do today. Undoubtedly this is what Dan Rather and Katie Couric will tell you when they talk about universal healthcare, but they’re all wrong.
The first thing you must understand is why the liberals want you to think this is a good idea. They want to make everyone in America rely on the government. Why, you might ask? It’s because that’s the best way to win votes. Just think about it. If you’re running for an elected position, it doesn’t matter what it’s for, and you’re in a real close race but in the11th hour you tell the voters that you’re going to give them something for nothing if they vote for you. Who do you think will win? You, who is promising the voters something for nothing, or your competition who is promising to just do the job he is being elected for? Obviously, you will win, because by their very nature, people are lazy and stupid. They are willing to take something for nothing without thinking of the consequences of it down the road.
“So what are the consequences?” you ask. Well there are many consequences. One is that the government will without a doubt, begin to regulate prices for medicines, operations, medical equipment, medical supplies and even medical labor wages (doctors and nurses). Just a few months ago we saw the effect of Senator Clinton’s attempts to regulate the flu vaccine. There was a price cap put in place on the drug companies who produced the flu vaccine, and as a result these companies found it to be unprofitable to produce the vaccine in large quantities. Therefore there was a shortage of the vaccine, and thousands of Americans who wanted the vaccine couldn’t get it because there simply wasn’t any available. Many of these people, by the way died as a result of the shortage. The laws of supply and demand were not able to take effect, because of the price cap imposed on the drug companies.
Liberals will argue however, that the price caps were meant so that even poor people could afford to get a flu vaccine. Unfortunately, if the suppliers of the vaccine stop production of it, it really doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are because there is simply nothing available to buy. In my mind, it would have been much better to allow the drug companies to charge a fair market price (the price that is dictated by supply and demand), even though that price would have been much higher than under the price cap. By allowing this, the companies would still find it profitable to produce large quantities of the vaccine, and even though it may have been too expensive for some to buy, there at least would have been some available for everyone else to buy.
Now let’s think about that prior situation. The government tells a drug company “hey, you’re charging too much, the little people can’t afford your medicine, so you’re going to have to charge a lower price.” Now think about that last sentence as if it were being spoken to a doctor. It would go a little something like this, “hey, Doctor so and so, you’re charging too much for your services, and not everyone can afford to get medical help from you, so you’re going to have to lower your prices to the set price that we tell you.” Remember how in the previous scenario how the drug companies stopped producing the unprofitable drug, because of those price caps? Well what do you think will happen if similar price caps are imposed on our nation’s doctors (which will happen under universal healthcare)? All of those young, bright minds who aspire to become doctors, with dreams of becoming rich from doing something they love, will no longer see the incentive to going into the medical profession. As a result, we’ll be getting B and C class doctors, as opposed to the A class that we have today. As a matter of fact, it’s happening right now. Doctors are being slammed with so many malpractice suits, that it is costing them a fortune to stay in business. Many bright college students are recognizing this and are studying other professions, like law, because they probably figure, if you can’t beat ‘em, why not join ‘em?
The quality and quantity of healthcare and medicines will be reduced as I just demonstrated, but at the same time you’ll have to wait longer for this new found slow service. Michael Savage reported in his new book, The Enemy Within: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Schools, Faith, and Military, that waiting lists in Canada for just a simple MRI can be months long at times. He even told a story about one Canadian man who got tired of waiting for his MRI, and decided to make an appointment with a local veterinarian, whose services did not fall under Canada’s universal healthcare (i.e. the price for the services were still dictated by supply and demand). He made an appointment under the name “Fido”, and went to the vet to get his MRI. Savage conveniently noted that the man “paid in cash”, implying that he could pay for the services (not needing the government’s assistance), and he obviously demanded the service at that earlier date enough because had he simply waited a few months he wouldn’t have had to pay for it at all (other than what he had already paid in taxes).
Another problem that will affect the length of time you wait for your medical services or prescriptions is that people will become a bunch of crybabies. What I mean by that is every cough, and every headache will send everyone flocking to the doctor’s office. Why? Because it’s FREE! This will force everyone else, who actually needs serious medical attention, to wait for little Billy to get his tummy checked out because he ate too much ice cream.
Those in favor of this universal healthcare, just keep in mind the old saying that you pay for what you get.
